Using Packet Writing in GBM

Packet writing lets you add data incrementally to a disc in small or large quantities. Data is written to the disc in small "packets", so it is possible to record even a single file at a time; making the CD/DVD to be more like a floppy or a hard drive.

The most popular packet writing soft wares are:

  1. DLA: (Direct Letter Access): The following DLA’s listed are available for free:
IBM DLA, developed by IBM. TheIBM version of DLA has been reported to work with many non-IBM drives, and is also available for free online download! Download the installation package from IBM web-site and install it on your computer. It may notify you during the installation that your recording drive is not supported because either it's not an IBM branded drive or is an incompatible drive. Just ignore this message and proceed with the installation - IBM DLA still works OK with most of the drives, even if the installation program initially displays a warning like this.

Another option is to use the Dell DLA package (free). This is actually a full installer for Sonic DLA 4.95. This package does not pay attention to the hardware platform and it installs on systems with no previous version of DLA installed.

  2. Drag-to-Disc (DirectCD), developed Roxio

  3. InCD, developed by Ahead

GBM supports burning as well as Packet Writing (with the aid of third party software) for backing up data to CD/DVD disks. To enable GBM to use Third Party Packet writing, please refer to the following steps

  1. From the left navigation menu in the backup wizard select Where to Backup
  2. Select CD/DVD media ( DVD±RW/DVD±R/DVD-RAM/CD-R or CD-RW)
  3. Select Use packet writing Software
  4. You can also set “Automatically erase disc before backup option”

GBM detects if the CD-RW, DVD-RW or DVD+RW is UDF formatted. If the disk is not UDF formatted it will show the following message:
“If media has not been formatted with Third Party Packet Writing SW, please make sure to disable this option in 'Where to Backup'.”

Therefore, you must format your discs via packet writing software before proceeding with the backup.

If the backup does not fit onto one CD or DVD, GBM will automatically span the backup over multiple media. Each disc is assigned a different label for future identification. We recommend marking the CD/DVD with this label.

One disadvantage of using packet writing is that CD/DVDs written with this method are recognized on other computers only if the same third party packet writing software is installed there too.
