Chaining Backups

A common practice is to run one backup after another. You can use Genie Backup Manager to enable
automatic execution for backup runs using one of the following:

  1. Pre and Post commands:*
  2. Pre- and Post-commands enables users to perform specific tasks before and after the backup job.
You can activate the use of these commands from the Backup Settings Page; (i.e. step 4 of the backup process) to chain backups perform the following:

    • Edit your first backup job> Go to Settings> More Settings> Pre & post jobs commands> Enable
Pre and Post commands> Select Post-Backup Command> Enable Command> Then place the
      following command:

    • GBM EXCUTABLE FILE PATH” -e -job "BACKUP JOB NAME

Where: GBM EXCUTABLE FILE PATH is by default:

(In Genie Backup Manager 9.0) >>
      C:\Program Files\Genie9\Genie Backup Manager\GBM.exe
(In Genie Backup Manager 8.0) >>
      C:\Program Files\Genie-Soft\ GBMHome8\ GBM8.exe (For GBM Home 8.0)
      C:\Program Files\Genie-Soft\ GBMPro8\ GBM8.exe (For GBM Pro 8.0 x86)
      C:\Program Files\Genie-Soft\ GBMPro8x64\ GBM8.exe (For GBM Pro 8.0 x64)
      C:\Program Files\Genie-Soft\ GBMServer8\ GBM8.exe (For GBM Server 8.0 x86)
      C:\Program Files\Genie-Soft\ GBMServer8x64\ GBM8.exe (For GBM Server 8.0 x64)

    • Enable “Wait until previous process ends”.
    • If you have multiple jobs you wish to execute one after another create a batch file repeating the command for each backup job changing BACKUPJOBNAME to the corresponding backup job and
then browse for it from the “Pre& post jobs commands” page.

  3. Create a batch file:

If you do not wish to use Pre and Post Commands, or the feature is unavailable in your product, you can create a batch file (*.bat) and write the command below :

“INSTALLATION PATH\GBM.EXE” -e -job "BACKUP JOB NAME"

Example: If I’m using Genie Backup Manager 9.0 and want to run the backup jobs “My Documents” and “My Photos” one after another, then the commands in the batch file will be:

“C:\Program Files\Genie9\Genie Backup Manager\GBM.exe” -e -job "My Documents"
“C:\Program Files\Genie9\Genie Backup Manager\GBM.exe” -e -job "My Photos"

*Only available in GBM Pro and Server versions 8 and 9

Applies to:
