Microsoft Passport or Windows Live ID is popping up during backup or verification

SYMPTOMS:
During verification or backup, Windows Passport or Live ID requests login.

CAUSE
One of the items backed up enables access to certain Internet communication features (such as Windows Messenger).

RESOLUTION:

  1. Make sure Nethood folder is not selected in backup: the Nethood folder is a hidden folder that is stored in C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Nethood. This folder comprises icons that are actually shortcuts to the remote computer or disk drive
  2. Exclude Internet cookies from My Profile> Internet Explorer
  3. Remove additional Passport Accounts in Windows XP
    1. Open User Accounts from the control panel and click on your username.
    2. Select Manage your network passwords.
    3. When the stored user names and passwords window appears you can remove accounts simply by highlighting them and selecting remove. Passport.Net\* indicates the account associated with your user account

Note: If your machine is part of a domain you can access the stored user names and passwords dialog by going to Start > Run and typing in control userpasswords2.

  1. Once the user accounts window has opened select the Advanced tab > manage passwords button
  2. If you are not an administrator on your local machine and attempt this you will be presented with an error, if you select the 'manage your passwords' text in the lower paragraph you will be able to access the stored user names and passwords dialog.
  1. Prevent Windows XP associating Microsoft Passport details with my user account:
    1. Go to Start, select run and start the registry editor by typing in regedit.
    2. In the registry navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService.
    3. If a registry value called PassportBalloon does not already exist here, go to the Edit menu, select "New, Binary Value", enter a name of PassportBalloon, and then click Enter.
    4. Double-click on the PassportBalloon value, set it to 0A 00 00 00, and then click OK.

Note: To reverse this, right-click and delete the PassportBalloon binary entry.
