Error Message: Failed to communicate with Volume Shadow Copy Service, rebooting your system may solve the problem, or failed to initialize Volume Shadow Copy Service

Volume Shadow Copy Service is Microsoft’s latest feature to backup open and locked files. GBM utilizes VSS to backup open files to backup open files without the need to install additional Plug-ins.

In order to find the specific error you are encountering, please run the Windows backup utility from Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Backup, select a small test backup then after it finishes, click view report.

RESOLUTION:

  1. Check that you have the latest build from Help > About.
    You can download the latest build from here
    http://www.genie-soft.com/download/download.html
  2. If you have imaging software on your computer, try to update them.
  3. If you have Windows Server 2003 you can check this article in Microsoft technical support knowledge base:
    http://support.microsoft.com/KB/913648

If the problem persists:

Click here to download this batch file, run it then reboot your system. Check if the problem is solved.

Check the following Services, by referring to:

  • Go to the Control Panel (Start -> Control Panel)
  • Double-click the Administrative Tools icon (you must be in Classic View mode)
  • Double-click the Services icon
  • Scroll down to the item COM+ Event System and double-click the line
  • Change the startup type to Manual, click Start to check if it can start properly, then click OK
  • Scroll down to the item COM+ System Application and double-click the line
  • Change the startup type to Manual, click Start to check if it can start properly, then click OK
  • Scroll down to the item Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and double-click the line
  • Change the startup type to Automatic, click Start to check if it can start properly, then click OK (note that this may not be possible if Windows Vista is being used)
  • Scroll down to the item System Event Notification and double-click the line
  • Change the startup type to Automatic, click Start to check if it can start properly, then click OK
  • Scroll to the item MS Software Shadow Copy Provider (or Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider if Windows Vista is being used) and double-click the line
  • Change the startup type to Automatic, click Start to check if it can start properly, then click OK
  • Scroll down to the item Volume Shadow Copy and double-click the linereg
  • Change the startup type to Manual or Automatic, click Start to check if it can start properly, then click OK
  • Then reboot your system.
