Genie Timeline can't see the backup drive

SYMPTOMS

  • Genie Timeline shows a message on its dashboard that “Backup drive is not accessible” though you can access the drive from Windows explorer.

  • Genie Timeline tries to backup to any other USB drive attached to the machine if the backup drive is not attached.

CAUSE

  • The letter you have assigned for your backup destination is A or B and in Genie Timeline these letters are reserved to the floppy drivers.

  • Genie Timeline can’t determine which of the attached drives is the one you are backing up to.

RESOLUTION

a) Change the drives letter to any other letter starting from D, to do that:

For Windows XP and 2003:

  1. Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.

  2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance.

  3. Click Administrative Tools, double-click Computer Management, and then click Disk Management in the left pane.

  4. Right-click the drive, the partition, the logical drive, or the volume that you want to assign a drive letter to, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.

  5. Click Change.

  6. Click Assign the following drive letter if it is not already selected, click the drive letter that you want to use, and then click OK.

  7. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the drive letter change. The drive letter of the drive, the partition, or the volume that you specified is changed, and the new drive letter appears in the appropriate drive, partition, or volume in the Disk Management tool.

For Windows Vista, 7 and Server 2008:

  1. Click the Start button, then click Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Computer Management.

  2. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  3. In the Navigation pane, click Disk Management.

  4. Right-click the partition or drive that you want to change, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.

  5. To change a drive letter, click Change, click Assign the following drive letter, click the letter that you want to use, and then click OK.

b) Change the Drive letter stored in the configuration file of Genie Timeline, by doing the following:

  1. Wait for the backup to reach 100%, then stop Genie Timeline service from (Start -> Search/Run -> services.msc for the services list to appear) Locate Genie Timeline service --> Stop

  2. Copy and paste this URL to your file explorer location bar:

    %APPDATA%\Genie9\GenieTimeLine\Jobs\{F4298088-7F22-4808-98AC-50A36B17C7A9}

  3. Edit the Configurations.xml

  4. Locate the following parameter:

    Param name="path" value="Z:\_Genie Timeline"/

  5. Change the value of the parameter "Z:\_Genie Timeline" to reference the new drive letter change, you have performed in step A, so for example it will be:

    Param name="path" value="D:\_Genie Timeline"

  6. Start Genie Timeline service from Start -> Search/Run -> services.msc

APPLIES TO
