Genie Timeline does not back up all my files and folders

SYMPTOMS:

When navigating your _Genie Timeline folder inside your backup drive, you notice missing files.

CAUSE:

Genie Timeline introduced a de-duplication feature that does not backup the same file twice, which
aims to save space in the backup drive; this feature locates duplicated files based on comparing hashes
of backed up files against each other.

RESOLUTION:

Please use the Timeline Explorer located under your "My Computer"/"Computer" window, due to it shows duplicated files in their original location.

As a proof that your files are indeed backed up under the _Genie Timeline folder inside your backup drive, please use this guide to be rest assured that Timeline is working correctly and backing up all those files:

  • Download a free and open source tool called “Everything” from this link:

    http://www.voidtools.com/download.php

It is basically a search tool for files and folders, with impressive reporting capabilities.

  • After installing, please make sure that you select the drive that Timeline backs up to, and the main drive as well that contains the original files, to be included it in the search tool "Everything".

  • After launching "Everything" application, select Tools >> Options >> Volumes >> Select the needed drives, and be sure to check all of the four boxes underneath each drive. In this example, the backup drive that Timeline uses is (D:), and the main drive that contains the original files is (C:).

  • Afterwards perform a search for any file that you suspect that it’s missing;

  • Everything program will show all the instances of that file, and report to you the location as well.

As you see in this example, the file "Zoolz.apk" is a duplicate file that is stored in two different locations, and Timeline picked one instance of that file and backed it up to the (D:) drive.

** Note: Everything search tool only supports drives with NTFS file systems.

** Note: Everything search tool does not support network drives.

APPLIES TO:
All Genie Timeline 2012 and above editions
